Engels and Human Development¶
Core Argument¶
The central thesis of this article is that Engels' 1876 essay The Part Played by Labour in the Transition from Ape to Man provides a fundamentally correct materialist explanation of human origins, one that has been vindicated by subsequent palaeoanthropological discoveries. The claim is that labour—conscious, purposeful interaction with nature through tool-making and social cooperation—is not a consequence of human biological development (particularly brain expansion) but its primary cause. Engels inverted the idealist assumption that a large brain preceded human distinctiveness, arguing instead that bipedalism freed the hands for tool use, that tool use and social labour necessitated speech, and that these together drove the development of the brain. The article contends that modern fossil evidence, especially the discovery of Australopithecus afarensis (Lucy), confirms Engels' sequence: upright posture and manipulative hands preceded significant brain growth by over a million years.
Theoretical Grounding¶
The analysis draws on the dialectical materialist method as developed by Marx and Engels, applying it specifically to the question of human origins. It operates within the tradition of Engels' Dialectics of Nature and his attempt to demonstrate that dialectical materialism is a universal world outlook applicable to natural as well as social science. The key theoretical move is the application of dialectical categories—quantitative change to qualitative change, the unity and struggle of opposites, the negation of the negation—to biological evolution. The article argues that labour represents a qualitative leap from the merely adaptive behaviour of animals, and that this leap cannot be explained by gradualist Darwinian mechanisms alone. It also draws on Marx's concept of "practical consciousness" (language as social consciousness arising from material activity) and Lenin's formulation of the transition from sense perception to abstract thought. The theoretical tradition is thus classical Marxism's engagement with natural science, distinct from both mechanical materialism (which would reduce social development to biology) and idealism (which would derive human distinctiveness from mind or spirit).
Conjunctural Relevance¶
Written in 2000, the article engages with the then-recent fossil discoveries of the 1970s and 1980s—particularly Johanson's Lucy (1974) and the Laetoli footprints (1976)—which had transformed palaeoanthropology. These discoveries provided concrete evidence for Engels' hypothesis that bipedalism and tool use preceded brain expansion, a position that was still contested within mainstream anthropology at the time. The article situates itself against lingering idealist and religious conceptions of human origins, as well as against sociobiological and genetic determinist trends that would reduce human behaviour to biological programming. The broader political conjuncture is the post-Soviet period, in which Marxist ideas had been largely expelled from academic discourse; the article functions as a reassertion of the scientific credentials of dialectical materialism against both postmodern relativism and crude biological reductionism. The implicit political argument is that if labour created humanity, then the transformation of labour under socialism is the necessary condition for humanity's further development—a point made explicit in the closing paragraphs.
