2026-07-12 Weekly briefing¶
The week's logs reveal a system generating synthetic booms from its own disruptions. The 61% ClarkSea Index surge is the clearest signal: shipping capital is posting record profits not because trade is expanding, but because geopolitical fragmentation—Hormuz closure, tariff deadlines, war-driven fuel switching—has made every voyage longer, every route more expensive, every ton of cargo more costly to move. This is profit extracted from friction, not from production.
The contradiction sharpening beneath the surface is temporal. Container rates are inflated by importers frontloading inventory to beat tariff deadlines—hoarding disguised as logistics. The unwind, expected in July, will leave carriers with overstretched capacity and importers with stockpiles they do not yet need. Meanwhile, China's coal imports continue their structural decline, exposing dry bulk overcapacity built for a trade route that is shrinking. The industry's $2.4 trillion fleet and orderbook represents fixed capital betting on the permanence of crisis.
The single thread worth carrying into next week: the US durable goods inflation flip—from deflation to 2-3% as tariffs surged past 11%—shows how inter-imperialist rivalry directly raises the cost of reproducing the working class. Tariffs interrupt the global overcapacity that had been driving down consumer prices, but they do not resolve it. They shift the cost onto domestic households. If the tariff window closes and container rates collapse, the resulting inventory overhang and price adjustment will test whether the system can absorb its own contradictions without a sharper downturn. Watch for the July pause in bookings—it will reveal whether the synthetic boom was a hedge or a trap.

Stuck at the last 10% - Wellred — vault state.md claims "raw backlog clear" and "main priority next week," but the commit ledger shows zero Wellred code changes all week. The 38 Wellred commits are exclusively docs: session records, handoffs, and state.md cleanup. No CSS freeze, no batch catalogue, no designer-ready output shipped. - Aviation retrieval — Mind bot live test (state.md) found 5/9 aviation queries still failing; numeric hallucination guardrail added but "worth tightening further later." No commit evidence of a follow-up pass this week.
One decision - Wellred: ship the CSS freeze or park it. The docs say it's the priority but zero code moved. Decide by Wednesday whether to actually finish the batch or formally demote it.
