13. The Genesis of Mind¶
Core Argument¶
This chapter argues that the human mind is not a divine gift or an idealist abstraction but the highest product of material evolution, forged through labour, language, and social interaction. The brain itself—a 1.5-kilogram organ of 100 billion neurons, consuming a fifth of the body’s energy—is the physical substrate of consciousness. Its decisive feature is the enlarged neocortex, particularly the frontal lobes and cerebellum, which underpin planning, foresight, and automatic skills. Evolution did not proceed smoothly; brain development occurred in punctuated bursts, with the greatest leaps coinciding with the emergence of mammals, primates, and, crucially, hominids.
In under three million years, the human brain tripled in relative size, the cortex now accounting for 70–80 per cent of brain volume. Engels’s insight—that labour, not a pre-existing brain, drove this expansion—is confirmed by fossil evidence: early bipedal hominids had ape-sized brains. Erect posture freed the hands, and the subsequent dialectic of tool-making, cooperative labour, and speech spurred neural growth. The prefrontal cortex, six times larger in humans than in apes, is linked to speech centres. Vygotsky demonstrated that inner speech—internalised self-talk—is decisive for memory and abstract thought, allowing humans to escape the present, recall the past, and anticipate the future, unlike animals locked into immediacy.
The chapter traces cognitive development from newborn reflexes to abstract operations, following Piaget’s stages while incorporating Vygotsky’s emphasis on culture and tools. The child’s first two years constitute an intellectual revolution: through practical manipulation of objects, the infant constructs notions of space, causality, and time, refuting Kant’s a priori categories. The realisation that objects persist when unseen is a “Copernican revolution” of the intellect. Language, emerging from pre-verbal signs, initiates socialisation; morality, too, is learned through language, not innate sentiment.
Rose critiques reductionist approaches that collapse memory into molecular configurations, arguing they lead to idealism. Intuition, often mistaken for divine inspiration, is merely interiorised experience. There is no purely intellectual act; emotion and cognition condition each other. The mediating factor between subject and object is labour; thought is interiorised social intercourse. Piaget notes a parallel between the child’s early thought and early Greek philosophy’s shift from mythology to materialist explanation, showing individual development recapitulating the species’ cognitive evolution. Consciousness is the highest product of matter, and a classless society, the chapter concludes, will bring a new leap in human understanding.
