Dialectics

Core Argument

This chapter establishes dialectics as the science of interconnection, contrasting it with metaphysical modes of thought. Its central argument is that the three fundamental laws of dialectics—the transformation of quantity into quality, the interpenetration of opposites, and the negation of the negation—are not, as Hegel maintained, laws of thought imposed upon nature and history, but rather laws abstracted from the actual development of nature and human society. Hegel's idealist error consisted in "foisting" these laws onto the universe as products of a system of thought that itself represents only a definite stage of human evolution. Once this inversion is corrected, the dialectical laws become "simple and clear as noonday."

The chapter concentrates on demonstrating the first law—the transformation of quantity into quality—through extensive evidence from the natural sciences. The law is expressed thus: qualitative changes in nature can occur only through quantitative addition or subtraction of matter or motion. All qualitative differences rest on differences of chemical composition or different quantities of motion, and usually both. The argument proceeds through a systematic examination of successive levels of material organisation. Division of a non-living body eventually reaches a limit where the molecule is qualitatively distinct from the mass, and the atom from the molecule—a difference that grounds the separation of mechanics, physics, and chemistry as distinct sciences.

In physics, every change of state—water freezing or boiling, metal reaching incandescence or fusion, gas reaching its critical point—represents a nodal point where quantitative addition or subtraction of motion produces qualitative alteration. Chemistry provides the most striking triumphs: ozone differs from ordinary oxygen solely through the addition of one atom; the nitrogen oxides form a series where each quantitative difference in oxygen content produces a qualitatively distinct substance; the homologous series of paraffins, alcohols, and fatty acids demonstrate that each addition of CH₂ yields a body with distinct properties. Even the periodic law is invoked: Mendeleyev's prediction of eka-aluminium (gallium) is presented as an unconscious application of Hegel's law, comparable in scientific achievement to Leverrier's calculation of Neptune's orbit.

The chapter's polemical thrust is directed against those who dismiss dialectics as mysticism or incomprehensible transcendentalism. The author anticipates that such critics will, upon seeing the law demonstrated through familiar scientific examples, declare it self-evident and trivial—having employed it unknowingly all along, like Molière's Monsieur Jourdain speaking prose without knowing it. The rejoinder is that formulating a universally valid law of development for nature, society, and thought remains an act of historic importance, regardless of its retrospective obviousness.
