Explanatory Notes¶
This section contains the back-matter apparatus for the volume, beginning with a conversion table for Russian weights and measurements (dessiatine, verst, pood). It explains the discrepancy between the Old Style (Julian) and New Style (Gregorian) calendars, noting the author’s preference for Old Style dating. A note on spelling addresses transliteration from Cyrillic. The core of the chapter is a brief glossary defining key Russian terms and historical entities: Cossacks, Junkers, Kulak, Muzhik, Okhrana, Pogrom, Cadets (Constitutional Democrats), Social Revolutionaries (SRs), Soviets, Duma, Zemstvo, and Zemsky Sobor. Each entry provides a concise political and historical context, notably characterising the soviets and the subsequent Stalinist degeneration.
