Icelandair further expands A320neo fleet through additional lease agreement¶
Six more aircraft to arrive for summer 2028 operations.
Icelandair has disclosed that it will lease six Airbus A320neos, sourcing the twinjets from US-based lessor Aircastle.
The aircraft will be introduced before the summer 2028 season.
Icelandair says that they are part of a batch of 10 A320neos being acquired, with the other four being taken through Saudi Arabian lessor AviLease.
The AviLease aircraft are scheduled to arrive over the first half of next year.
All 10 of the twinjets will be fitted with Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines.
Icelandair says that the jets were manufactured between 2018-20.
The airline already operates six Airbus A321LRs, and it expects three more to arrive this year.
Icelandair stated in its recent half-year briefing that it also took an aircraft on lease in the second quarter owing to late A321LR delivery.
It says the A320neos will bring its Airbus fleet to 20.
Introduction of the jets is part of a fleet transformation through which Icelandair is planning to take up to 25 long-range A321XLRs from 2029, while it has also been bringing in Boeing 737 Max models.
Icelandair is phasing out its Boeing 757 and 767 fleets, adding that it has “accelerated” their retirement and will cease operating them on its passenger network from January next year.
“Next year, we will reach the important milestone of operating our entire passenger network with new-generation aircraft that consume up to 30% less fuel per seat,” says chief executive Bogi Nils Bogason.
