EDGE continues international expansion with Akaer acquisition¶
Capture of Brazilian engineering specialist will give UAE-based group added impetus in UAV development.
UAE state-owned defence and technology company EDGE has continued its international expansion with the acquisition of Brazilian aerospace and engineering company Akaer.
Based in Sao Jose dos Campos, Akaer is a supplier of engineering services to multiple aerospace OEMs and tier one firms. Customers include near neighbour Embraer, for which it has worked on programmes including the KC-390 military transport, an aircraftbeing acquired by the UAE.
In addition, the company has branched out in recent years into the design and manufacture of unmanned air vehicles (UAV), including its Albatross and Osprey surveillance and attack platforms.
Edge says the acquisition – still subject to regulatory clearance – will provide it with “an established engineering base in Brazil and a highly skilled, multidisciplinary team”.
This, it adds, will “strengthen EDGE’s ability to secure industrialisation timelines on key UAV programmes”.
Akaer and EDGE have been collaborating since 2023 on “the development and industrialisation of unmanned systems”, it says.
EDGE has not disclosed financial details of the transaction.
