Communications

Communications: 1 General

The aircraft communication system provides: - Radio communication between aircraft and ground stations - An interphone between: o Cockpit crew stations o Cabin crew stations o Ground crew stations. - Passenger address system - Distribution through loudspeakers of aural alerts generated by FWS and T2CAS. Note As per regulations all communications are recorded on the Cockpit Voice Recorder. The communication system comprises: - As standard features: o Radio Management Application o VHF System o Passenger Address o Ground Crew Call System o Cabin and Flight Crew Call System o Cabin and Service Interphone o Audio Integrating o Static Discharger o Cockpit Voice Recorder. - As optional features: o HF System o SELCAL o Aircraft Communication Addressing of Reporting System (ACARS) o Announcement & Music Reproducing System. In addition the communication system includes two ATC transponders.

Communications: 2 VHF Communication System

The aircraft is equipped with two identical VHF systems independent of each other. The VHF transceiver operates in the 118 MHz to 136.975 MHz range with 8.33 kHz spacing. The VHF 1 or VHF 2 transceiver enables to transmit and receive voice communications through acoustic equipment (boomset, headset, hand microphone, loudspeakers and oxygen mask). Each system includes a transceiver connected to his antenna and to the RMA.

The VHF has the capability to automatically cutoff transmission against unintentional or continuous transmission linked with jammed Push-To-Talk (PTT) devices or equipment malfunction. After 30 s of continuous transmission, a tone is heard to indicate impending cutout of transmission (TX). Five seconds later, transmission is cutoff and FAIL indication replaces the active frequency on the VCP/MCDU. The tone and the FAIL indication remains displayed as long as the VHF is latched for transmission. VHF EMITTING alert is displayed on EWD and reception mode (RX) remains available on the affected VHF. VHF EMITTING alert remains displayed on EWD as long as affected VHF transmission (TX) is not restored, Refer to PRO.NNO.ABN.23.1 VHF EMITTING - Alert

Communications: 3 HF Communication System

(Applies: 1054) The aircraft is equipped with a single HF system. This system enables two way voice communications in the 2 MHz to 29.9999 MHz range providing a selection capability of 280 000 channels, spaced at 100 Hz increments. Each system includes a transceiver connected to the single HF antenna and to the RMA. Note During HF communications, ADFs are inhibited to avoid interferences. HF system is SELCAL capable.

Communications: 4 Interphone System

The service interphone system enables communications between flight crew, cabin crew, and the ground crew. Ground Service interphone jacks enable connection of headsets. The service interphone function in the cockpit is activated by selection of INT in the Captain or First Officer audio control panel. Communication between all stations: the cockpit and the service interphone jacks.

Communications: 5 Passenger Address System

The Passenger Address (PA) system enables the flight and cabin crew to make announcements to the passengers. PA system also generates single chime sound in the cabin.

The PA system is connected to: - The RCAU which enables the flight crew to make announcements to the passengers by selecting PA key on audio control panel - The cabin crew handset - The cabin crew CALL pb distributed in the cabin for the passengers - The cabin crew CALL pb in the cockpit - The NO DEVICE/FASTEN SEAT BELTS controls - The CVR - Loudspeakers distributed in the cabin (one of them being installed in the toilet).

Communications: 6 Radio Management Function

The Radio Management System (RMS) handles Radio COMMunication, Radio NAVigation, and TCAS/XPDR through Virtual Control Panels (VCPs), Multi Function Control Panel (MCPs), and Multi Control Display Units (MCDUs). These functions, which are performed by the Radio Management Application RMA, ensure the correct management and the information exchange involving input data and equipment. The aim of RMA is to manage sets of radio navigation and radio communication equipment and to provide flight crew communication and navigation settings awareness on different displays. RMS consists of two redundant RMA software applications, RMA 1 and RMA 2, which are hosted respectively inside Display Units 2 and 4.

(Applies: 1096-1283) The ARINC Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) system is optional. It can be customized by the operator to meet their requirements. This chapter provides a generic description of system. Refer to Collins Operator’s Guide for detailed description of all features. The ACARS is a data link system which enables exchange of data between an aircraft and a ground based station over an ARINC or SITA network.

System Description

(Applies: 1096-1283) The airborne ACARS system includes: - One CMU (Communication Management Unit) installed in one 80VU avionics shelf - Two MCDUs (Multifunction Control Display Unit) installed on the pedestal. The MCDU are the main interface for preparing, sending downlink messages and reading uplink messages. MCDUs are shared between FMS 1/2, RMS 1/2, MPC and ACARS - One printer for printing out, if necessary, messages received and displayed on MCDU - One VHF (VHF 3). This VHF is dedicated to ACARS and cannot be used for voice communications - Two ATC DLK attention getter lights which turn on upon reception of ATS messages - Aircraft discretes for OOOI (Out of Gate, Takeoff, Aircraft On Ground, Aircraft In Gate) information. The system is interfaced with: - MPC for engine parameters and Fuel On Board - GPS for position and time - ATC control panel for Flight Identification.

System Functions

(Applies: 1096-1283) The ACARS system main pages are the following: - AOC STD (Airline Operation Control Standard) pages: These pages are identified by DL in page header. They give access to predefined report pages and free text page - ATS (Air Traffic Services) pages: These pages are identified by ATS in page header. ATS Departure Clearances and D-ATIS are available in ATS MENU page - TECHNICAL pages: These pages are used for system initialization and identified by ACARS in header. All functions are detailed in Collins Operator’s Guide.

Communications: 1 Audio Control Panel

Only one key can be engaged at a time. Light comes on white when selected. 3 VOICE ONLY Key When pressed, it inhibits NAV receivers station identification by activating a band cut off filter above 1 020 Hz. Voice only light comes on amber.

4 INT/RAD Selector Provides selection of transmission mode when using OXY MASK or BOOMSET microphone (MIC). INT Hot MIC position. Interphone is always operative between crew stations. Other transmissions require selecting a transmission key and using a PTT pb. NEUTRAL Interphone is inoperative. Other transmissions require selecting a transmission key and using a PTT pb. RAD This position is required to automatically connect for transmissions BOOMSET and OXY MASK MICs without using a PTT pb, when released the selector is spring-loaded to NEUTRAL. Note Recovering boomset/micro function when the oxygen mask is out of its container : Refer to PRO.NOP.NSU.25.1.1 Boomset-Micro Function Recovery on Oxygen Mask.

Communications: 2 MCP

The Multi Function Control panel (MCP) enables the modification of some communications parameters via a keyboard.

Communications: 3 VCP

The Virtual Control panel (VCP) is a part of MFD. It appears on the bottom right of MFD. VCP communication page appears by pressing COM on the MCP. VHF or HF pages can be selected by using arrow pushbuttons on MCP to select the communication equipment required. Selection on one VCP is simultaneously updated on the opposite flight crew member display.

1 ACTIVE Active frequency window, enables the flight crew to set a new active frequency by clicking on it (MCP or MCDU). FAIL amber message is displayed in the frequency window when the associated VHF is failed or is continuously transmitting for more than 35 s. 2 Transfer Switch Clicking on it transfers stand by frequency to active (MCP or MCDU). 3 STBY Standby frequency windows, enables the flight crew to set a new standby frequency by clicking on it (MCP or MCDU).

FAIL amber message replaces the active frequency and - - replaces TX symbol when the associated VHF is failed or continously transmitting for more than 35 s. 2 STBY Stand by frequency, set from scratch pad or preset. 3 PRESET R3 LSK enables access to preset frequencies. 4 SQL R5 LSK enables turning off/on the squelch. Note Turn on the squelch to avoid receiving audio noise from a VHF transceiver. However when the squelch is turned on, it may suppress useful VHF voice message when the signal is weak. CAUTION With the squelch turned on, a VHF transceiver may attenuate and block the received signal when the other VHF transceiver is transmitting. In case VHF transceivers are simultaneously used, it is therefore recommended to turn the squelch off to prevent loss of reception.

5 EMER R6 LSK if pressed will automatically tune emergency frequency 121.500 as active. 4) IESI

Communications: 5 ATC Control Box

ATC Controls are on XPDR tab of VCP (Virtual Control Panel) which is part of MFD.

Code, Mode, Altitude Reporting, FLT ID or Selected XPDR functions can be changed on the XPDR page.

Communications: 6 PUSH-TO-TALK Selector on Control Wheel

RADIO NEUTRAL INTERPHONE The outboard horn of both control wheels is provided with Push-To-Talk (PTT selector) controlling the transmission mode and effective only when BOOMSET or OXY MASK MIC is used for transmission. PTT Selector INTERPHONE Forward position spring-loaded to neutral. Transmission on flight interphone selected. INT transmission key has not to be used to communicate between cockpit crew stations. FAULT Comes on amber and the FWS is activated when an associated RCAU processing board failure or power loss is detected. ALTN (Pb released) The corresponding flight crew station is connected directly to a predefined VHF: - AUDIO 1 SEL pb connects CAPT station to VHF 1, or - AUDIO 2 SEL pb connects F/O station to VHF 2. Volume is adjusted by affected loudspeaker volume control. Note On the affected side, PA, interphone, and other VHF can no longer be used.

The antenna is in the fairing ahead of the stabilizer fin. This system includes its own battery. Emergency Beacon AUTO Transmission is made automatically on 121.5 MHz, 243 MHz, and 406 MHz when deceleration exceeds 5 g (X MIT ALERT Iight comes on amber). MAN Enables commanded operation ( X MIT ALERT amber Iight comes on). AUTO TEST RST It is used in case of undue alert (reset), or to test the Emergency beacon. Two cases are possible for the test: - No failure is detected : X MIT ALERT amber Iight comes on during 2 s - Failure is detected: X MIT ALERT light flashes during 15 s. CAUTION The test must not be performed in MAN mode. Aircraft on ground (and electrically supplied), when the emergency beacon is triggered after 30 s, the mechanical horn is triggered too. The ELT is located in the ceiling area of the passenger cabin, above the rear cabin crew seat. ELT

CALL RESET MECH ATTND CALL CALLS

EMER ATTND pb Call CALL blue light comes on and chimes will be generated when receiving a normal call from the cabin attendant. Amber EMER will come on and chimes will be generated, when an emergency call has been made from the cabin attendant handset. When pressed the pushbutton will generate a cockpit call at the cabin attendant station. MECH pb Call When a Mechanic call is received, the CALL blue light comes on while the chimes sound. When the pushbutton is pressed, a horn in the nose wheel bay sounds to draw attention of the ground crew. RESET pb Chimes will cease and the system will be rearmed for next call by pressing the RESET pb.
